| Microwave Tower |
This isn't nature, but it certainly is a familiar feature to motorists on the Kansas Turnpike through the Flint Hills between Cassoday and Emporia (and to photographers on the county roads). Although its function has been made obsolete by buried fiber-optic cable, the tower still stands, with its horn antennae and functioning navigation beacons. As a photographer, the tower was an exercise in crafting a vertical-format stitched photograph (this one is eight separate shots) with a smooth sky gradient. As one who spent 20 years in telecommunications (our alphabet stew jargon included T1, E1, T3, E&M, ISDN, SS7 and VOIP), the scene elicits a positive emotional response from me. The 10x40 inch print looks great! East of Matfield Green in Chase County, Kansas. June 25, 2005.
